Bio and abstract Keynote speaker prof. Tajana Rosing

Abstract:

In this talk I give an overview of the approaches we have developed at UCSD to significantly lower the energy consumption in computing systems. We derived optimal power management strategies for stationary workloads. Run-time adaptation can be done via an online learning algorithm that selects among a set of policies. We generalize the algorithm to include thermal management since we found that minimizing the power consumption does not necessarily reduce the overall energy costs. To reduce the performance costs typically associated with state of the art thermal management techniques, we developed a new set of proactive management policies. The experimental results using datacenter workloads show that our proactive technique is able to dramatically reduce the adverse effects of temperature by over 60%. Further extending our work in datacenter energy management, we have shown that symbiotic scheduling of workloads in virtualized environments can lead to average 35% energy savings with 40% performance benefit in high utilization scenarios. Integrating SLA management capabilities along symbiotic workload scheduling enables 2x or higher increases in energy efficiency while meeting the SLA requirements. This is done by running a mix of SLA sensitive workloads and batch jobs per server. Lastly, I will show how we generalize these results to globally distributed datacenters where we leverage green energy availability and fast networking to minimize energy costs.

Bio:

Tajana Simunic Rosing is currently an Associate Professor in Computer Science Department at UCSD. Her research interests are energy efficient computing, embedded and wireless systems. Tajana's work on event driven dynamic power management laid the mathematical foundations for the engineering problem, devised a globally optimal solution and more importantly defined the framework for future researchers to approach these kinds of problems in embedded system design. Her recent results demonstrate the importance of joint power and thermal management in multicore server systems in order to minimize the overall energy cost. Furthermore, she developed a novel class of proactive thermal management policies that can lower the incidence of hot spots in multicore processors with no performance impact. Her current work is focused on developing energy efficient scheduling policies for virtualized server environments and on energy efficiency in population area healthcare networks.
From 1998 until 2005 she was a full time research scientist at HP Labs while also leading research efforts at Stanford University. She finished her PhD in EE in 2001 at Stanford, concurrently with finishing her Masters in Engineering Management. Her PhD topic was dynamic management of power consumption. Prior to pursuing the PhD, she worked as a senior design engineer at Altera Corporation. She obtained the MS in EE from University of Arizona. Her MS thesis topic was high-speed interconnect and driver-receiver circuit design. She has served at a number of Technical Paper Committees, and is currently an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. In the past she has been an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems.

GreenClouds @ VU & UvA

The NWO funded GreenClouds project studies how to reduce the energy footprint of modern High Performance Computing systems (like Clouds) that are distributed, elastically scalable, and contain a variety of hardware (accelerators and hybrid networks). The project takes a system-level approach and studies the problem of how to map high-performance applications onto such distributed systems, taking both performance and energy consumption into account. We will explore three ideas to reduce energy:

Exploit the diversity of computing architectures (e.g. GPUs, multicores) to run computations on those architectures that perform them in the most energy-efficient way;
Dynamically adapt the number of resources to the application needs accounting for computational and energy efficiency;
Use optical and photonic networks to transport data and computations in a more energy-efficient way.

The project will create the GreenClouds Knowledge Base System (GKBS) based on semantic web technology, which will provide detailed information on the energy characteristics of various applications (e.g., obtained from previous execution runs) and the different parts of the distributed system, including the network. Also, the project will study a broad range of applications and determine which classes of applications can reduce their energy consumption using accelerators. Finally, it will study energy reductions through dynamic adaptation of computing and networking resources. The project will make extensive use of the DAS-4 infrastructure, which is a wide-area testbed for computer scientists, to be equipped with many types of accelerators, a photonic network, and energy sensors.

The results of the project will be utilized by the SARA national HPC center that operates a supercomputer, clusters, accelerator systems, and an HPC cloud. Today, the costs of energy over the lifetime of these systems are already larger than their acquisition costs, so reducing energy is vitally important for centers like SARA. Moreover, the results will be utilized in DAS-4 itself.
